In 2008, Dr. Keith Birchard of Washington Orthopaedic Center traveled to Kudjip Nazarene Hospital in Papua New Guinea to offer his medical expertise to the local residents. Dr. Birchard spent three weeks away from home helping with a wide range of orthopedic injuries.

“…we saw a variety of acute and chronic injuries including fractures, fracture non-unions, lacerations and infections” – Dr. Birchard

During his visit, Dr. Birchard also performed a number of surgeries as well as non-operative treatments including casting and traction.

Even though Dr. Birchard is back working at Washington Orthopaedic Center in Centralia, Washington, his presence is still felt in Papua New Guinea, “…We continue to support the work in Papua New Guinea by sending surplus medical supplies as well as helping them order new orthopaedic supplies as needed,” says Dr. Birchard.

Below are some of the photos from the trip detailing many of the different procedures.
