The Physician Assistant provides primary health care and performs selective medical services under the direction of the clinic physician including but not limited to clinic exams, and hospital surgical assist/rounds.


Ÿ Obtains complete medical histories and physical data on patients and reviews patient records.

Ÿ Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Ÿ Performs complete physical exams, records findings and establishes presumptive diagnoses.

Ÿ Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.

Ÿ Synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnoses and therapeutic plans utilizing principles of prevention.

Ÿ Administers injections, immunizations and oral medications, sutures wounds and prepares written prescription orders for drugs and controlled substances.

Ÿ Interviews and advises patients regarding health and illness prevention and recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.

Ÿ Instructs patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions and provides patient education.

Ÿ Assists physicians by recording patient progress notes, issuing and transcribing diagnostic orders.

Ÿ Triages patient telephone calls and provides consultation as needed.

Ÿ Performs independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations.

Ÿ Provides monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.

Ÿ Assists in hospital surgical procedures.

Ÿ Conducts rounds and general follow-up post-surgery including but not limited to hospital rounds

Ÿ Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.

Ÿ Performs other responsibilities within job class as requested by the Physician.



Ÿ Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care
Ÿ Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to effectively administer patient care
Ÿ Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
Ÿ Skilled in applying and modifying principles, methods and techniques of medicine necessary to provide ongoing patient care
Ÿ Skilled in recording medical histories, assessing medical conditions and interpreting findings
Ÿ Skilled in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports and responding to correspondence
Ÿ Ability to develop and maintain quality control standards
Ÿ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
Ÿ Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Ÿ Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures
Ÿ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively


Ÿ Graduation from an accredited Physician’s Assistant program
Ÿ Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants
