JOB DESCRIPTION

Job title: Surgical Technologist

Reports to: OR Charge Nurse

Department: ASC

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:  

The surgical technologists is part of the surgical team and works under the supervision of the OR Charge Nurse.  They assist the surgeon during surgical procedures and anticipates the surgeons needs to ensure a smooth and efficient surgical outcome.                                                                               

 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

JOB REQUIREMENTS                                                                                                    

• Ability to multi-task and anticipate the needs of surgeon. 
• Prepare and organize the operating room. 
• Work in conjunction with the sterile processing staff. Able and willing to assist with autoclave decontamination and prevaccing of all instruments as needed.
• Responsible for autoclave preparation/biological/DART knowledge.
• Ensure readiness of OR per protocol.
• Assures that the proper supplies, instrumentation, & equipment are available for the procedure.
• Assures that equipment is functioning properly.
• Assists in OR turnover and cleaning of room and instruments as needed.
• Is able and available to wash and clean instruments per manufacturer’s instructions.  
• Performs sponge and needle counts as appropriate.
• Monitors for breaks in aseptic technique.
• Monitors that universal precautions are maintained.   
• Responsible for stocking the OR and notifying purchasing of supplies that are needed. 
• Responsible for the set up of the room and preparation for the next days’ cases.
• Prepared for emergency situations.
• Assist with positioning of the patient for procedure as needed.
• Orders supplies and helps with inventory control.
• Checks for outdated supplies.  
• Maintain sterile environment.
• Other duties as assigned by the OR Charge Nurse, ASC Manager, or Governing Body.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, regulations and procedures.
• Knowledge of medical/surgical equipment and instruments
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and appropriate precautions 
• Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, medical staff, and the public.
• Ability to maintain quality medical/surgical control standards
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
• Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures
• Ability to communicate clearly.                                     

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, SPECIAL TRAINING:

• Completion of a surgical technologist program or 5 years of on the job training, preferable in orthopedics. 
•  BLS Certification
• Active Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration                                                                                                                                              

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of two years of surgical technologist experience in ASC or hospital setting preferred.                                                                                                                                                      

Note:  Position requires full range of body motion including but not limited to handling and lifting of patients, manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination and ability to perform heavy manual procedures as required by orthopedic protocol.  Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.  Occasionally lifts patients weighing up to 300 pounds (with assist).  Requires normal visual acuity and hearing.  Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to clinic/hospital environments.  Position also involves working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
