JOB TITLE: ASC Sterile Processing Technician

REPORTS TO: ASC Director
DEPARTMENT: ASC


Overall Purpose of Job:

Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned or required.


Job Requirements:

  • Autoclave preparation.
  • Cleans, decontaminates, and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Assembles, wraps, and sterilizes trays of instruments.
  • Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
  • Monitors biological and chemical wash solutions to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment in a timely manner.
  • Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory.
  • Notifies purchasing of supplies that are needed.
  • Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and equipment storage areas.
  • Checks with operating room staff to verify all needed equipment for procedures is available and in working order.
  • Initiates requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement and removes defective equipment.
  • Maintains a clean work area.
  • Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, safety, and infection control standards.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical/surgical equipment and instruments.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and processing surgical and medical supplies.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and appropriate precautions.
  • Ability to maintain quality medical/surgical control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills.

Education, Qualifications, and Special Training:

  • Certification in Sterile Processing.
  • CPR certification.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication skills in a team setting.
  • Task-oriented with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills and ability to review future surgical schedules to project equipment needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of Sterile Processing program preferred.

Experience:

  • One year of sterile processing experience in a hospital or ASC setting.
  • Orthopedic experience preferred.

Job Type & Pay:

  • Full-time
  • Pay: $25.00 – $34.00 per hour
  • Expected Hours: 32 – 40 per week

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

This position requires a full range of body motion, including but not limited to:

  • Handling and lifting equipment.
  • Manual and finger dexterity.
  • Eye-hand coordination.
  • Performing heavy manual procedures as required.
  • Standing and walking for prolonged periods.
  • Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
  • Lifting/pushing/pulling over 50 lbs.
  • Normal visual acuity and hearing required.
  • Frequent exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, chemicals, fumes, noise, and other conditions common to clinic/hospital environments.
  • Position involves working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
